HOOKIPA BEACH OVERLOOK Hana Hwy 36E (just before Mile Marker 9) near Paia (East Maui) Spectacular view of an international windsurfing site. IAO NEEDLE End of Iao Valley Road (Hwy. 32), Iao Valley, Wailuku (Central Maui) Iao Needle, symbol of Maui and a state monument (2,250 feet high from sea level). A paved 0.6-mile walk provides a scenic viewpoint of Kukaemoku (Iao Needle), an erosional feature which rises 1,200 feet from the valley floor. KAHAKULOA VILLAGE OVERLOOK Highway 340W (Just beyond Mile Marker 15) (West Maui) Spectacular view of Maui's most remote fishing village and Kahakuloa Head (Elephant Mountain). KALAHAKU OVERLOOK Haleakala National Park Hwy 378 (Haleakala Crater Rd.: Below Summit) (Upcountry Maui) Great view at 9,324 feet. Rare silversword plants in a special enclosure at the overlook. KAUMAHINA STATE WAYSIDE Highway 360E (Hana Hwy: Mile Marker 12) (East Maui) A 7.8 acre forested rest stop with picnicking and scenic viewpoint of northeast Maui coastline. Showy exotic plants. Wonderful overlook of Keanae Peninsula and village. No drinking water. KAUPO Highway 31 (South Maui) A drive on the wild side! The rugged coastline and desolate part of the island. Home to a semi-ghost town and magnificent canyons that march to the sea. KEANAE PENINSULA Highway 360E (Hana Hwy - Near Keanae Arboretum) (East Maui) Spectacular shoreline drive past lava pinnacles, taro patches, old Hawaiian village, church (1856). Great spot for picnic. (Tide pools are slippery and dangerous). KOKI PENINSULA Haneoo Road off Hwy 31 (beyond Hana) (East Maui) Beautiful peninsula. Great view of Alau island. Koki red sand beach and Hamoa beach, one of Maui's most spectacular beaches. LA PEROUSE BAY Makena (South Maui) Site of Maui's last lava flow in the 1790's. Ancient King's Highway hike along lava flow, spectacular shoreline, secluded coves and many ancient archaeological sites. Dolphins are often seen in the bay. LA PEROUSE OVERLOOK Highway 31 (Beyond Tedeschi Winery), Ulupalakua (Upcountry Maui) Great view from 2,000 feet of La Perouse Bay. (Site of Maui's last lava flow in the 1790s.) LELEIWI OVERLOOK Haleakala National Park Hwy 378 (Haleakala Crater Rd. at Mile Marker 17) (Upcountry Maui) Excellent view of West Maui from 8,800 feet. MCGREGOR POINT LOOKOUT Honoapiilani Highway, Hwy 30 (between Lahaina and Kihei) (West Maui) Panoramic view. One of the best locations for whale spotting in season (December to May). Pacific Whale Foundation's Ocean Outreach Van and staff naturalists at McGregor point on a daily basis during whale watching season. NAHIKU VILLAGE PARK Hana Hwy 360E (Mile Marker 25), Nahiku (East Maui) Great ocean view at the end of a lush tropical forest. Pretty picnic area. PACIFIC WHALE FOUNDATION'S OCEAN OBSERVATORY DECK 101 North Kihei Road, Suite 21, Kihei, HI 96753 (South Maui) A great place to spot whales during season (December to May)! Join a Pacific Whale Foundation naturalist for an informal presentation about Hawaii's humpback whales, and learn techniques for locating and watching whales from land. Call: (808) 879-8860 or 1-800-942-5311. PUAA KAA STATE WAYSIDE Hana Hwy 360 - approx. 38 miles east of Kahului Airport (East Maui) 5.0 acre rest stop. Picnicking in the rain forest. An idyllic area with small scenic waterfalls and pools. No drinking water. PUU ULA ULA SUMMIT Haleakala National Park Hwy 378 (Haleakala Crater Rd.) (Upcountry Maui) Awe-inspiring view at the summit of the volcano at 10,023 foot elevation. Viewing the Sunrise at the Summit is unforgettable! RICE MEMORIAL PARK Jct. Hwy 37 & 377 (Kula & Haleakala Highways), Kula (Upcountry Maui) Incredible panoramic view of West Maui from 3,000 feet. Great place for picnic. ULUPALAKUA RANCH Kula Highway (Hwy 37) (Upcountry Maui) Beautiful drive through a 30,000 acre cattle and sheep ranch on the slopes of Haleakala above Wailea. VISITOR CENTER Haleakala National Park Hwy 378 (Haleakala Crater Rd.) (Upcountry Maui) Awesome view of Haleakala Crater from 9,745 feet. WAIKANE FALLS Hana Hwy 360E (after Wailua Overlook) (East Maui) Spectacular triple waterfalls and pool. WAILUA FALLS Hwy 31 (Beyond Hana - after Mile Marker 45) (East Maui) One hundred foot falls - one of Maui's most photographed. WAILUA VALLEY STATE WAYSIDE Hana Hwy 360 (approx. 32 miles east of Kahului Airport) (East Maui) 1.5 acres. Breathtaking view of an old Hawaiian Village (Wailua) and taro patches plus views of Keanae Valley, and Koolau Gap in Haleakala's rim. No drinking water. |
