NIAULANI NATURE WALK AND FOREST TOUR Place: Volcano Art Center, Hawaii National Park, Volcano, HI 96785, 967-8222 Date: 5/5/2008 through 5/26/2008 (May 5, 12, 19, 26) This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail. The walk introduces individuals, families, and groups to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus not only on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, but also the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians. Offered every Monday at 9:30 a.m., the weekly walk starts just one mile from the entrance to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Meet at Volcano Art Center's Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village (corner of Kalanikoa and Old Volcano Roads). Free (calabash donations welcome). 9:30 p.m. |

ISLAND OF LIFE IN THE PACIFIC: THE NATIONAL PARKS OF HAWAII Place: Volcano Art Center, Hawaii National Park, Volcano, HI 96785, 967-8222 Date: 5/6/2008 through 5/21/2008 "Islands of Life in the Pacific: The National Parks of Hawai'i." This 16 day/15 night Elderhostel program visits Hawai'i's National Parks, Historical Sites, National Wildlife Refuges, and State Parks on five Hawaiian Islands: Hawai'i (the Big Island), Maui, Moloka'i, Kaua'i, and O'ahu. KUMANU IN CONCERT! Place: Volcano Art Center, Hawaii National Park, Volcano, HI 96785, 967-8222 Date: 5/10/2008 "Kumanu in Concert!" This innovative new music group recently released their debut CD, Earth Patriot. Kumanu consists of 12 musicians, vocalists, and dancers blending several musical genres to create a new "global fusion music" that reflects their diverse multi-cultural backgrounds, from Native Hawaiian and Native American to African American, Asian, and European ancestry. Several well known Hawai'i-based performing artists make up Kumanu, including Damon Williams, James McWhinney, Rupert Tripp, Jr., Tioni Tam Sing, Bruce David, Doug Espejo, Adam Kay, Randy Skaggs, Marsha Hee, Kamaluhia Woolley, Gregg Perry, and Howard Shapiro. It's that time of year again when everything cowboy is celebrated with 10 full days of hollering hoopla honoring the heritage of the Hamakua Coast. This year, Western Week takes place from May 17 through May 26, culminating with the Hawaii Saddle Club's Memorial Day Weekend Rodeo. |

KECK OBSERVATORY SCIENCE LECTURE MAY 22, 2008 Place: W. M. Keck Observatory, 65-1120 Mamalahoa Hwy, Kamuela, HI 96743 Date: 5/22/2008 The public is invited to attend a science lecture by Dr. Rafael Millan-Gabet from the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Millan-Gabet will present "Planet Forming Disks - What We Can Learn by Combining the World's Largest Telescopes." His research examines physical conditions in the inner parts of disks around young stars, where planets like Earth are believed to form. Combining the largest existing telescopes so they act in concert, the Keck Interferometer, provides unprecedented detail, and allows us to infer crucial properties of exo-Earth nurseries. |

3RD ANNUAL HILO INTER-TRIBAL POWWOW Place: Wailoa Park, Hilo, HI 96720, 557-8607 Date: 5/24/2008 through 5/26/2008 The Third Annual Hilo Inter-Tribal PowWow will take place May 24, 25 & 26, 2008 at Wailoa River Park in Hilo, Hawai'i. The theme of this year's event is "Honoring Our Heroes." This free, family-oriented event starts at 9:00 am and ends at 6 pm on Saturday and Sunday. On Monday, there will be a Veterans' Honoring Ceremony and the colors will be retired at 4 pm. Grand Entry is at 10 am, all three days. Everyone is invited to experience the sights, sounds, flavors and spirit of Native America through music, dance, storytelling, food and crafts. This is a drug and alcohol free event. |
