2008 BIG ISLAND - HAWAII HEALING GARDEN FESTIVAL Place: 82-6188 Mamalahoa Hwy, Captain Cook, HI 96704, 808-638-0888 Date: 11/1/2008 through 11/6/2008 A statewide celebration of multi-cultural medicinal and nutritional plants of Hawaii. Polynesian, Hawaiian, Ayurvedic, Chinese, Filipino, cultural practitioners and ethno-botanists, will share their knowledge of Hawaii's rich botanical treasures. Featuring lectures, tours, workshops, adult and children's programs, a Healing Arts Fair and cultural entertainment.The Big Island Festival starts November 1-2 with Saturday's Fetsival Day Celebration and Sunday's Workshop & Tour Day at Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden. Additional tours, classes and workshops will be held Monday November 3, though Thursday November 6, at unique locations around the Big Island. "NIAULANI NATURE WALK" - FREE FOREST TOUR IN VOLCANO Place: Volcano Art Center, Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, Volcano, HI 96785, 967-8222 Date: 11/3/2008 through 11/24/2008 (Nov. 3, 10, 17 & 24) - This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail. The walk introduces individuals, families, and groups to the native plants and birds of Volcano. Guides focus not only on the biological, ecological, and geological features of the area, but also the cultural usages of flora and fauna by native Hawaiians. Offered every Monday at 9:30 a.m., the weekly walk starts just one mile from the entrance to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Meet at Volcano Art Center's Niaulani Campus in Volcano Village (corner of Kalanikoa and Old Volcano Roads). Free (calabash donations welcome) |

MOKU O KEAWE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL Place: Hilton Waikoloa Village, 69-425 Waikoloa Beach Dr, Waikoloa, HI 96738, 886-2884 Date: 11/5/2008 through 11/9/2008 The Moku O Keawe International Festival is a 5-day celebration of hula and the arts of hula, expressed in many forms. The Festival includes a Hawaiian music Concert, Hula Competition and Final Night Performance, Cultural Workshops, and a Hawaii Marketplace. Hula Halau (troupes) from Hawaii , Japan and across the world compete in Kupuna (senior), Kahiko (ancient), and Auana (modern hula divisions. AN OLD HAWAII NIGHT Place: Waikoloa Beach Marriott, 69-275 Waikoloa Beach Drive, Waikoloa Resort Area, HI 96738, 808-326-7778 ext. 103 Date: 11/15/2008 An Old Hawaii Night is Saturday, November 15, 2008 at the newly-remodeled Waikoloa Beach Marriott Resort. This is the every-two-year fundraiser to benefit Family Support Services of West Hawaii, helping families and children. The event begins at 5 P.M. with no host cocktails and entry into the most spectacular silent auction, with a focus on Hawaiiana from the 40s through today, and also includes activities, dinners, artwork, and more. Cocktails on the lanai and the lawn outside of the Marriott's newly-remodeled ballroom and inside the silent auction area. Dinner will be served at your table at 6:30, with a sumptuous meal and fine wine. The live auction follows, featuring spectacular artwork and special Hawaiiana treasures, getaways, and more. Held on the third Sunday of each month, these work days are a unique opportunity for individuals, families, and groups to connect with nature and with each other while assisting in a variety of needed tasks, plus learn about the rich mixture of flora and fauna on the 7.4 acre property. |
