“EDGES” - AN EXHIBITION AT THE VOLCANO VILLAGE ARTISTS HUI Date: Friday, May 4th - 31st, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm, 2012 Place: Art Exhibition at The Wailoa Art Center, 200 Piopio St. Hilo HI 96720 (off Kamehameha Blvd. in Wailoa State Park), Big Island Contact: Elizabeth Miller, emiller002@hawaii.rr.com “Edges” is an exhibition of new works in a multitude of media by members of the Volcano Village Artists Hui. The show will run from May 7th - 31st at the Wailoa Center in Hilo with a gala opening reception on Friday, May 4th from 5 pm to 7 pm. How these respected artists bring attention to, interpret and express the particular edge they are exploring is sure to delight the senses and expand the mind. |

Activities will include demonstrations of wheel thrown pottery, the many wonderful possibilities of accordion book making, collage, Japanese paste paper and more. Come enjoy a day of free fun, learn how local artists create their unique works, and try your hand at a variety of creative projects. A delicious gourmet lunch will be available for purchase. |

THE ARTS AND TRADITIONS OF HULA AT KILAUEA - THE VOLCANO ART CENTER Date: Saturday, May 26th, 10:30am - 1:30pm, 2012 Place: Volcano Art Center Niaulani Campus, 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village, Big Island Contact: (808) 967-8222, info@volcanoartcenter.org This VAC program features an outdoor Hula Kahiko Informance with kumu Leilehua Yuen and Manu Josiah. A 50-minute narrated demonstration of the preparation, protocol and offering of traditional hula and chant at the hula platform in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. This presentation takes place rain or shine at the hula platform located near VAC Gallery. Audience are encouraged to bring sitting mat and sun/rain gear. On the same day, there is a hands-on cultural demonstration from 9:30AM to 1:30PM on the gallery porch. All events are free (donations welcome); park entrance fees apply. |

PA`U RIDING: PERPETUATING THE TRADITION IN TODAY’S GENERATION Date: Wednesday, May 30th, 5:30pm - 7 pm, 2012 Place: West Hawaii Civic Center, 74-5044 Ane Keohokalole Hwy., Kailua-Kona, Big Island Contact: Kona Historical Society, (808) 323-3222, khs@konahistorical.org Have you ever wondered what went on behind the scenes at a King Kamehameha Day Parade? How do the pa`u participants (horse riders) choose their colors and flora for their leis? What is the deeper meaning behind all the pagentry? How does pa`u riding differ now from the past? All these questions and more will be answered by a panel discussion mediated by Ku`ulani Auld, assistant executive director of the Kona Historical Society and Hannah Springer, “a kama‘aina of the ahupua‘a of Kaupulehu and a daughter of Huehue Ranch”. If you’ve ever been in a parade or plan to be in a pa`u unit in a parade or just want to hear more about this interesting topic be sure to be there! This is the May portion of a community lecture series for 2012 that spotlights local and state speakers on a wide variety of cultural and historical subjects. Presented by Kona Historical Society, in cooperation with the County of Hawai’i, this lecture series is a gift from the Society to the community that has supported it for so long. Free of charge, it is open to all, residents and visitors alike. |

BREAD BAKING AT THE PORTUGUESE STONE OVEN - KONA HISTORICAL SOCIETY Date: Every Thursday between 10:00 am - 1:00 pm & Every 2nd Tuesday of the month Place: In the pasture below Kona Historical Society headquarters in Kealakekua, Big Island Contact: Kona Historical Society, (808) 323-3222, khs@konahistorical.org The Kona Historical Society’s Portuguese Stone Oven is a reproduction of a typical oven used by the Portuguese immigrants who came to Kona in the 1880’s. Join the process of panning the dough and baking 96 loaves! The program is FREE and the bread is $7 per loaf. Bring your lunch and make a day of it with an oven-side picnic in the pasture. We hope to see you at the Portuguese Stone Oven in the pasture below KHS headquarters in Kealakekua. |
