INGREDIENTS HAWAII - THE FILM Date: February 4th, 5:30 pm, 2012 Place: Waimea Bay, North Shore Oahu Contact: Amanda Corby, amanda@undermyumbrella.com Come to Mamiya Theatre on Saturday, February 4, for Ingredients Hawaii where you can meet the cast and crew and see the world premiere of Ingredients Hawaii, Part One. This local documentary describes the ways in which Hawaii is reclaiming its agriculture and local food traditions despite the daunting food future. The VIP Reception and World Premiere will begin at 5:30pm for $45, followed by a film discussion on the future of sustainable agriculture in Hawaii. A second screening at 9:00pm is available for $10 pre-sale, or $12 at the door ($5 for students with valid ID). Parking is free. Parking is free and will be marked by signs. LOVE THE EARTH Date: Monday, February 13th, 10:00am - 1:00pm, 2012 Place: University of Hawaii Manoa, Oahu Contact: Under My Umbrella, info@undermyumbrella.com Stryophobia will launch their "Love The Earth" Campaign at the University of Hawai'i Manoa Campus Center Tent. The "Love The Earth" campaign was created to get the community moving and educated on the benefits of composting. The goal is to encourage the community to understand the consequences of using styrofoam and plastic on the environment. Styrophobia wants to inspire everyone to become ambassadors to their peers and community. Join us for contests, games, prizes and more. GiRL FeST Hawaii is an all-volunteer run violence prevention organization of the Safe Zone Foundation 501(c)3. Our mission is to prevent violence against women and girls through education and art. Our goal is to change peer culture in order to prevent increasing violence against women and girls through education, entertainment and positive representation of women. |

BANK OF HAWAII FAMILY SUNDAY: LOCAL LIFE Date: Sunday, February 19th, 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. (Third Sunday of every month, activities stop at 3 p.m.), 2012 Place: Honolulu Museum of Art, 900 S. The day offers a program of art activities, entertainment and film focused on an exhibition or art principle. Bank of Hawaii Family Sundays feature entertainment and activities suitable for families and people of all ages. Explore the Academy’s galleries through art hunts, art activities, demonstrations, film screenings and entertainment. Themes change monthly and tie in with the Academy’s permanent collections and special exhibitions. The Pavilion Cafe turns into a snack bar for Bank of Hawaii Family Sunday. THE QUICKSILVER IN MEMORY OF EDDIE AIKAU Date: December 1st, 2011 - February 29th, 2012 Place: Waimea Bay, North Shore Oahu Contact: Oceanpromotion@hawaii.rr.com It's a rare international sporting event that can have no set date, be held just eight times in a span of 27 years, and still gain strength. But the lifeblood of the big wave Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau lies in what one man's life represented: the best that surfing and Hawaii have to offer the world. The Quiksilver In Memory of Eddie Aikau is the most venerated big wave surfing event on Earth, held at Waimea Bay, Oahu, on a single day during the Hawaiian winter when, and if, waves exceed the 20-foot minimum requirement. The official holding period for this year, the 27th annual, is December 1, 2011 through February 29, 2012. |

2012 SANCTUARY OCEAN COUNT Date: The last Saturday of January through March (peak whale season), January 28th, February 25th, and March 31st, 8:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m, 2012 Place: The shores of O`ahu - O`ahu Site Descriptions, Hawai`i (Big Island) - Hawai`i Site Descriptions and Kaua`i - Kaua`i Site Descriptions Contact: Micki Ream (NOAA Education Specialist), (808) 694-3948, cell (650) 392-5448, micki.ream@noaa.gov The Sanctuary Ocean Count project offers the community a chance to monitor humpback whales from the shores of O`ahu, Hawai`i and Kaua`i. Not only has this proven to be a fun volunteer activity for residents and visitors, but it also helps to provide important population and distribution information on humpback whales around the Hawaiian Islands. Both site leaders and general volunteers are needed for all islands. Of course, the count cannot be done without the help of enthusiastic volunteers - we hope you'll consider taking part in this fun opportunity. |
