85TH ANNUAL LEI DAY CELEBRATION
Date: Tuesday - Wednesday, May 1st & 2nd, 9am - 5:30pm, 2012
Place: Queen Kapi‘olani Regional Park Bandstand, Honolulu, Oahu

The Hawaiian Steel Guitar Association will play from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., in the lei exhibit/ho‘olaule‘a area (open area between the bandstand and the Waikiki Shell). The Lei Contest Exhibit will be open to the public from 1:00-5:30 p.m., in the open area between the bandstand and the Waikiki Shell. Come to Kulana Lei, a village of Hawaiian artisans, as they share their talents and skills with exhibits and demonstrations throughout the day (10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). While at Kulana Lei, have the mo‘opuna (grandchildren) - come visit Tutu (grandmother) at Tutu’s Hale and hear stories, play Hawaiian games, learn a song, a hula, how to make a lei, and learn how to weave with lauhala. In addition to Kulana Lei, craft, lei and food vendors will also be in the park all day. All events are free and open to the public.

Since 2004, Bank of Hawaii has made it possible for the Academy to open its doors to the public free of charge on the third Sunday of every month. The day offers a program of art activities, entertainment and film focused on an exhibition or art principle. Bank of Hawaii Family Sundays feature entertainment and activities suitable for families and people of all ages. Explore the Academy’s galleries through art hunts, art activities, demonstrations, film screenings and entertainment. Themes change monthly and tie in with the Academy’s permanent collections and special exhibitions. The Pavilion Cafe turns into a snack bar for Bank of Hawaii Family Sunday. The kid-friendly menu includes grilled all-beef hot dogs, sloppy joes, PB&J sandwiches and a variety of chips. Open noon-3pm.
