TUESDAYS AT THE POND

 

Every Tuesday in November, the Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge is offering guided bird walks from  9:00 a.m- 10:30 a.m.. Meet at the Visitor Center, located at Milepost 6 on Mokulele Highway in Kihei. Admission is free and visitors are encouraged to bring binoculars, water, and comfortable walking shoes.For more information contact Courtney Brown at courtney_brown@fws.gov or (808) 875-1582.

 

Kealia Pond is host to some 30 species of birds, including migratory ducks and the endangered Hawaiian stilts and coots. The refuge has walking trails and a coastal boardwalk in Maui’s largest lowland wetland.  Established in 1992, the wildlife refuge covers over 700 acres between Kihei and Maalaea.

Refuge hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday to Friday.  Visitor Center hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday to Friday.  The refuge is closed on federal holidays. The boardwalk is open seven days a week from sunrise until 7 p.m, including federal holidays.
