Convergence Dance Theatre newest collaborative dance concert, ComMotion will be performed for two nights, on January 27th at 7:30pm and 28th at 2:00pm Paliku Theatre, at Windward Community College in Kaneohe. Tickets are $25/$30 and $15 student/senior.
Convergence Dance Theatre is pleased to announce our most exciting concert yet, ComMotion,
at the beautiful Paliku Theatre in Kaneohe. In our 15th season, we are proud to present another
dynamic and innovative evening of local contemporary dance, featuring several new pieces and
collaborations with local and national performing artists.
ComMotion exemplifies CDT's philosophy of "working together to accomplish more through
collaboration." The concert features new choreography by Jennifer Shannon Butler, Camille
Monson, and guest artists Meghen McKinley and Jose Silva. Two dance films and a multi-media
collaboration including a new musical composition by New York musician Mario Spinetti will be
incorporated into the concert. Each piece investigates the idea of commotion and its impact on
personal and social life situations and examines how commotion is generated from both
external and internal sources in our busy culture.
Monson's shapely and humorous "Naturally" is a satirical piece inspired by sexist commercials from the 1950's and 60's. The dialogue, gesture, and choreography poke fun at commonly perceived ways of being "natural." In contrast, Butler's newest piece, "Commotion," creates a sense of breathlessness as the dancers capture the "hurry hurry" drive of daily life as the dancers, knitted together in tight formation, ebb and flow from moments of calm to frantic movement, sharp angular gestures and sweeping changes of level - punctuated by breathtaking turns and intricate partner work.
Led by artistic director Jennifer Shannon Butler, CDT is a non-profit collaborative modern dance
company known for thought provoking, energetic and athletic dancing. For 15 years CDT has
created and performed emotionally charged choreography with humorous and often satirical looks at personal, social and political issues. Each CDT concert presents work from various
choreographers joined by a concurrent theme, always representing the collaborative spirit that
fuels CDT's passion for creating new work through process-oriented choreography.
