The University of Hawai‘i Presents Shank's Mare Amazing Puppetry presented by Yara Arts Group
Pearl City Cultural Center October 1, 2017 • 2:00pm
University of Hawai‘i Presents will be hosting Shank’s Mare, a collaboration between Tom Lee (Mililani/New York) and traditional Japanese Puppeteer, Koryu Nishikawa V at the Pearl City Cultural Center on October 1st at 2pm. Tickets are available at http://www.outreach.hawaii.edu/community/ or call (808) 956- 8246.
Lee and Nishikawa’s collaboration combines traditional Japanese puppetry with video production and live music to create exceptional imagery and a story that explores how traditions are passed on. TimeOut NY’s Helen Shaw said, “You simply won’t see better puppetry anywhere nor a tighter braiding of methods old and new nor artists working so confidently at the peak of their craft.”
Lee has performed extensively with other companies in New York such as, War Horse at Lincoln Center Theater with puppetry by the Handspring Puppet Company of South Africa and was also a principal puppeteer for Anthony Minghella’s production of Madama Butterfly at the Metropolitan Opera with puppetry by Blind Summit Theatre.
Nishikawa is the current director of the Hachioji Kuruma Ningyo, a company that has been in his family for five generations. Nishikawa began apprenticing kuruma ningyo puppetry under his father and grandfather when he was 13 years old. In 2004, Nishikawa was named the Cultural Ambassador of his hometown, Hachioji City.
