The Daughters of Mary Immaculate (also known as the Marianist Sisters) religious order was founded in 1816 in Agen, France, by Venerable Adèle de Batz de Trenquelléon, who devoted her life to caring for the poor.
The Society of Mary (Marianist brothers and priests) was founded in Bordeaux, France, on October 2, 1817, by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade. This after a group of young men expressed their desire to “consecrate themselves to God and to Mary by the vows of religion.”
Marianists, who embrace education as a means of uplifting society, founded Chaminade University of Honolulu, the University of Dayton and St. Mary’s University of San Antonio, Texas.
