Thousands of orchids in displays created by top notch growers and amateurs entice audiences in this three day orchid extravaganza at Edith Kanaka'ole Stadium. See exotic species, beautifully grown specimen plants and the latest hybrids, many created by Big Island orchid breeders. Judging of plants will be conducted by certified American Orchid Society judges. Information about orchids and their cultivation will be offered in free mini-classes conducted by experts. alternativehawaii.com. Instruction on flower arranging with orchids will also be provided. A refreshment area with entertainment in the afternoons and a silent auction are exciting new features this year. Sales areas offer orchid and plant related products plus magnificent orchids for purchase, including some you won't find in your typical retail garden store or nursery. Purchases may be shipped to the mainland.

The Orchestra of the Hawaiian Islands performs "Pacific Moon Under the Stars". Conductors Philip Simmons and Hiroaki Ueba will lead members of the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra in a diverse musical program featuring Gershwin's Lullaby, Yasushi Akutagawa's Triptique for Strings, a new arrangement of Queen Lili'uokalani's Me Mele Lahui, and the Vivaldi Guitar Concerto in D. alternativehawaii.com. The 6th Annual Kane Hula Festival and 3rd Annual Keiki Hula Competition - August 14-15 2010 in Modesto, CA celebrates the life of Hula Master and dear friend George Na`ope. Our competition and his traditions will live on in this hula festival weekend. This hula competition will feature hula halau from Hawai`i, Japan, and the Mainland. alternativehawaii.com. Our hula competition is a 2 day event with competition in hula kahiko, hula `auana, and hula Koho`ia (a chosen chant composed each year for this event. Bertram Gabriel Bellinghausen's enduring and exceptionally captivating ethnographic record of an era at a time in Hawaii when Western and Hawaiian cultures were merging is on display through October 2009, at Hilo's Lyman Museum. The exhibit, Na Pa`i Ki`i, Photographs of the Kingdom of Hawaii, 1883 to 1905, is curated by emeritus English professor, Dr. Albert Lum, and sponsored by Chaminade University and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. Lyman Museum and Mission House are open Monday through Saturday.

HAWAII'S 4TH ANNUAL WORLD HERITAGE FESTIVAL

Weave yourself into Hawaii's beautiful tapestry of people blending together at Kalakaua Park in
a spirit of peace, harmony, love and aloha. Hawaii's World Heritage Festival features cultures

OBON FESTIVAL DANCES
Date: June through August
Place: Buddhist Temples throughout the islands
The Obon tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and
cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening of
dance, music and merry-making. Special services usually start at 7:00 p.m. followed by a festival
with bon (folk) dance at 8:00 p.m. Held at different temples on different dates. Check newspapers
for schedule.
RANGER-LED PROGRAMS: HAWAII VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

Ranger-led walks and hikes enrich your knowledge of the Park's resources and Hawaiian culture.

VOLCANO ART CENTER
