The Hawai`i Community College Akua `Aina Ceramics Club members are having a pottery sale on Saturday, May 1, from 9:00 am - 1:00 pm in the ceramics lab located at the corner of Kawili and Manono Street in Hilo. Items for sale include utilitarian wares and sculptures. This event helps raise needed funds for safety equipments, workshops, and other studio improvements. NATIVE SPECIES ART HIKE IN KAHUKU UNIT

Native Species Art Hike in Kahuku Unit, Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park This unique hike is for amateur and professional artists of all ages who plan to submit artwork for the juried show Hawai‘i Nei 2010 held June 12 to July 26. This unique guided hike visits the Kahuku area of Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Join National Park Resource Management Staff and artists Jennifer and Scott Manley to see remnant forest fragments that shelter rare species and learn of the plans to restore this unique and beautiful koa-ohia forest. Participants should bring water and lunch, and be prepared for hot, sunny and dry conditions. Limited to 10 participants. Cosponsored by the Three Mountain Alliance and the Volcano Art Center. Free!

Halau Kala'akeakauikawekiu presents their 5th annual 'Mama'my Mama, I Love You Mother's Day hula and concert celebration. Guests will enjoy entertainment by the halau, music by Weldon Kekauoha, Lorna Lim, Napua Greig and others and mistresses of ceremony Skylark Rossetti and Penny Kelii Vredenburg. $40 ticket helps underwrite expenses for halau participation in the Queen Lili'uokalani Keiki Hula Competition on Oahu. Friday, May 14, 2010 has been set for the 14th annual Tropical Paws benefit for the Hawaii Island Humane Society. alternativehawaii.com. The "paw-sitively paw-some" gala affair will be held at the elegant Four Seasons Hualalai Resort beginning at 6:00 p.m. Silent and live auctions, Four Seasons-style buffet dinner, live entertainment and dancing are anticipated for the evening. Tickets sell out every year and will be available approximately one month prior to the event.

VOLUNTEER FOREST RESTORATION PROJECT

This month's project will be weather dependent. If the rains continue, we will plant native understory species to add diversity to the koa forest on the Mauna Loa strip of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. We will work under a canopy of maturing koa trees in an area with a pasture grass and bracken fern ground cover. alternativehawaii.com. If it is too dry, we will work in a koa-manele (soapberry) forest with a recently planted native understory. We will remove vines that are smothering the native plant seedlings and dig up re-sprouting blackberries. In either case, we will learn about the park's native forest restoration program and see the progress on the Mauna Loa strip. Volunteers should be at least 14 years old, and be able to hike at least one mile over uneven terrain. Sponsored by Friends of Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Flip Out a storytelling performance with Lorraine Godoy, Angie Libadisos and Sandra Claveria. Through a series of comedic monologues, these Pinay lolas (Filipino grandmothers) in their 60’s tell their life stories, exploring and exploding myths about Filipinos. They share wry, caustic humor and profoundly moving and diverse recollections of growing up in Hawaii. alternativehawaii.com. HAWAIIAN SLACK KEY & AMERICAN FINGERSTLYLE GUITAR

Hawaii born, Chris Yeaton, draws from a lineage of great Hawaiian Slack Key tradition. His musical inspiration and journey began with one of Hawaii's most celebrated musicians, Master Slack Key guitarist Keola Beamer, and continued with Big Island Slack Key master John Keawe. alternativehawaii.com. Along with traditional Slack Key pieces he incorporates a blend of contemporary Fingerstyle into his playing, drawing from other renowned artists such as, William Ackerman, Alex de Grassi, Michael Hedges, William Coulter, & Peppino D'Agostino. Yeaton's is a unique style of beautiful and progressive Slack Key. His 2nd album 'Ho'o Pa'a, "The Stand" was released in January of 2006. "IN THE FIELD": NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY

Join award-winning photographer and wildlife biologist Jack Jeffrey for inspirational sessions of photographing the splendor of Hawai'i's native flora and fauna. Various aspects of nature photography discussed include equipment, exposure, composition, lighting, close-ups, and photo ethics. Start early in the morning at the top of the Mauna Loa Road within Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and meander down the road to Kipukapuaulu (bird park). Day 1 is designed for those with limited field experience using their cameras. Learn about the history, culture, and people of Hawai’i in this series of informal talks, sponsored by the Volcano Art Center in conjunction with Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park. This month’s presentation is “Na Mea Ka Lua: Art of the Warrior” with Manny Mattos. Mattos is a dry land forest conservationist and kalai la‘au (Hawaiian carver), who shares stories about creating traditional weaponry from the wood of various endangered native trees. Free!!! This one-hour nature walk travels through a lush portion of an old-growth Hawaiian rain forest on an easy, 1/7-mile loop trail.
