The Kaua`i Japanese Cultural Society presents the 26th annual Matsuri Kaua`i, a Japanese cultural festival, on Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Kaua`i War Memorial Convention Hall from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Admission is free. WAIPĀ KALO FESTIVAL 2010

Waipā Foundation, in partnership with Limahuli Garden and Preserve, will host a Kalo Festival this year,Oct. 16th-17th, "E Ola Nā Iwi iā Kākou" means to honor the traditions of our ancestors and is the theme of this grassroots event, which will focus on highlighting, celebrating, and sharing anything and everything about kalo.
Saturday's ho`olaule`a in the big field at Waipā, and will feature hands-on workshops, educational displays, booths, tasting and demonstrations; Biggest kalo competitions and recognition of kupuna mahi`ai Kalo (Kalo farmers); lo`i tours, food and craft vendors, keiki activities and games, a cooking contest, and Kalo art contest Entertainment will include music, presentations and movies into the evening. This event is a fundraiser for the Waipā Community Kitchen and Poi Mill, and will be a minimum to zero waste event, so think about to bringing your own plates and utensils, and do not use styrofoam. Entry fees for the day will be $3 for adults and $1 for kids under 12. alternativehawaii.com. On Sunday, Limahuli Garden and Preserve will host a Kalo varieties identification workshop from 9-11am followed by a Kalo tasting and pā`ina until 12:30pm .

KIDS' KAUAI AT THE KAUAI CHILDREN'S DISCOVERY MUSEUM

Kids' Kauai occupies the Kauai Children's Discovery Museum as a mini-island, providing a view
of Kauai "from a kid's-eye-level". The main floor represents the island with exhibit
stations describing the plants, animals, and natural history of Kauai. The accompanying Activity
Table features different activities including printing on kapa (Hawaiian cloth made from pounded
bark) to painting reef fish to solving puzzles! An outer ring of exhibits surrounding the floor
represents Kauai's waterways (ocean, river & stream) and the life they support. $5/adults,

OHANA DAY FOR HAWAII RESIDENTS
Date: 3rd Saturday of Every Month (through December 15)
Time: 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 1 p.m. & 2 p.m.
Place: National Tropical Botanical Garden, Allerton Garden, Poipu
A 2-1/2 hour guided 1-mile walking tour. Reservations are required, and a credit card is needed
to guarantee the reservation. Free to Hawaii residents with proof of residency. No shows or those

HISTORIC WAIMEA WALKING TOUR

Place: West Kauai Technology & Visitors Center, Waimea
Take a 90-minute walking tour and experience "A Glimpse of the Historic Waimea". Best
known as the place English explorer Capt. James Cook first landed in Hawaii. Missionaries established
schools; rice and sugar growers changed the landscape; and historic buildings were rebuilt after
Hurricane Iniki. Enrich your historical knowledge about the town that was once a major population

ALOHA FRIDAYS

WALKING TOUR - OLD WAIMEA SUGAR PLANTATION
Date: Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
Time: 9:00 a.m. (Approx. 90 min. tours)
Place: Waimea Plantation Cottages, Waimea (West Side)
Volunteers lead you back in time through Waimea Plantation Cottages, a vacation resort of restored
plantation houses, and the neighboring Waimea Sugar Co. "camp" of houses dating to the
turn of the century. Learn about the immigrants that came from all over the world to build the
sugar industry. Waimea Mill Sugar Company (1884-1969) was a family operation and was for many
years the smallest sugar plantation in the Hawaiian Islands. Selected by Travel Holiday Magazine
as one of the 25 Best Kept Secrets in Hawaii March 1998. Tours are limited to 12 people. Call:

HANAPEPE ART NIGHT
Date: Every Friday Evening

Place: Hanapepe
Every Friday night is unique. Participating galleries take turn being the weekly "host gallery",
offering original performances or demonstrations which become the theme for that art night. All
the galleries are lit up and decked out giving the town a special atmosphere. Enjoy a stroll down
the streets of quaint, historic Hanapepe Town and meet the local artists.
SAILING WITH LATA: THE ORIGINAL POLYNESIAN NAVIGATOR
Date: Through October 31

A Polynesian story tells of Lata (Lake in Hawaii, Laa in Tahiti, Rata in New Zealand), the first
person to build a canoe or vata. The Tuamokoan story of Lata is especially informative about how
to build and sail an authentic vaka. The exhibit is made possible through the Vaka Taumoko Project

DARK CLOUDS OVER PARADISE: THE HAWAII INTERNEE STORY

Little is known about the compelling story of the Hawaii Japanese-Americans who were incarcerated
during World War II. An educational traveling exhibit produced by the Japanese Cultural Center

HAWAIIANA FESTIVAL
Date: October 11 - 14
Place: Hyatt Regency Kauai, Poipu
A three-day series of educational programs plus entertainment and luau, designed to teach the
customs, crafts and spirit of Hawaii’s native people. Learn how to live in the spirit of
aloha. See lauhala weaving, stone carving, wood carving, traditional use of feathers and lei-making.
