STOP 1: HOOMALUHIA GARDEN PHOTOGRAPH
START: WAIKIKI AT INTERSECTION OF KALAKAUA & KAPAHULU AVENUES  
DIST/TIME: Approx. 16.1 Miles / 30 Mins.  
WATCH FOR: Signs-Hoomaluhia Garden  
 ROUTE:
  • From intersection, take Kapahulu Ave. to H-1W
  • Take H-1W & go 2.8 mi. to Exit 21B (61N:Pali)
  • Take Exit 21B onto Hwy 61 & go 7.9 mi.to Hwy 83
  • Turn Left onto Hwy 83W & go 2.2 mi.to Luluku Rd
  • Turn Left onto Luluku Rd. & go short way to entrance gate-proceed to visitor center pkg. lot
A magnificent 400 acre botanical garden at the foot of the Koolau Mountains planted with trees and shrubs from the tropics of the world, including many unique to Hawaii. Hoomaluhia is laced with a network of hiking trails.

Note: Open daily 9-4, tel.233-7323 (tours), visitor center, art gallery, picnic, camping, restrooms.

Caution: Avoid contact with unknown plants. Walking shoes, insect repellent, raingear recommended.




STOP 2: HEEIA STATE PARK PHOTOGRAPH
LEAVE: HOOMALUHIA VISITOR CENTER  
DIST/TIME: Approx. 4.8 Miles / 15 Mins.  
WATCH FOR: Sign-Heeia State Park (Right Side)  
 ROUTE:
  • Return to entrance & go short way (0.3 mi.) on Luluku Rd. to Anoi Rd. (stop sign)
  • Turn Left onto Anoi Rd & go short way to Hwy 63
  • Turn Left onto Hwy 63 & go short way to Hwy 83W
  • Turn Right onto Hwy 83W & go 1 mi. to Haiku Rd.
  • Turn Right onto Haiku Rd. & go short way (0.7 mi.) to Hwy 836
  • Turn Left onto Hwy 836 & go 1.4 mi. to entrance.
Panoramic views of Kaneohe Bay & Heeia Fishpond (a well preserved example of how Hawaiians farmed the sea).

STOP 3: SENATOR FONG'S PLANTATION & GARDENS PHOTOGRAPH
LEAVE: HEEIA VISITOR CENTER PKG.LOT  
DIST/TIME: Approx. 4.6 Miles / 10 Mins.  
WATCH FOR: Sign-Pulama Rd. (Right Side)  
 ROUTE:
  • Turn Right onto Hwy 836 & go 2.7 mi. to Jct. Hwy 836 & 83W
  • Turn Right onto Hwy 83W & go 1 mi. to Pulama Rd.
  • Turn Left onto Pulama Rd. & go short way (0.8 mi.) to pkg. lot
Senator Fong's estate featuring 725 acres of rain forest spread over the slopes of the Koolau mountains containing gardens, orchards and tropical foliage.

Note: Entry charge (includes tram tour), open daily 10-4, tel.239-6775, visitor center, gift shop, snack bar, restrooms. Guided walking tours.




STOP 4: BYODO-IN TEMPLE PHOTOGRAPH
LEAVE: SENATOR FONG'S PLANTATION PKG. LOT  
DIST/TIME: Approx. 4.4 Miles / 10 Mins.  
WATCH FOR: White Chapel on Hillside (Right Side)  
 ROUTE:
  • Return to Hwy 83
  • Turn Right onto Hwy 83E (toward Honolulu) & go 2.8 mi. to Valley of the Temples entrance road
  • Turn Right onto entrance road & go short way (0.8 mi) to pkg. lot.
A stunning replica of the 900 year old Buddhist temple at Uji, Japan. Exquisite Japanese gardens and fish pond.

Note: Entry charge, open daily 8:30-5:00, tel.239-8811, gift shop, restrooms.

Caution: Please don't disturb the peacocks!




STOP 5: HAIKU GARDENS PHOTOGRAPH
LEAVE: BYODO-IN TEMPLE PKG. LOT  
DIST/TIME: Approx. 2.3 Miles / 5 Mins  
WATCH FOR: Sign-Haleiwa Joe's (Left Side)  
 ROUTE:
  • Turn Right onto Hwy 83E & go 1.5 mi.to Haiku Rd
  • Turn Right onto Haiku Rd. & go short way to gardens pkg. lot (left side-at Haleiwa Joe's)
Tropical garden on 16 acres dating from the mid-1800's.




STOP 6: ULU PO HEIAU PHOTOGRAPH
LEAVE: HAIKU GARDENS PKG. LOT  
DIST/TIME: Approx. 6.9 Miles / 22 Mins.  
WATCH FOR: Castle Medical Center (Left Side)  
 ROUTE:
  • Turn Right onto Haiku Rd. & go short way (0.9 mi.) to Hwy 836
  • Turn Right onto Hwy 836 & go 3.8 mi. to Hwy 61N
  • Turn Left onto Hwy 61N & go 1.8 mi. to Ulukahiki St. (left side-at traffic light, by Castle Medical Center at Jct. Hwy 61N & 72)
  • Turn Left onto Ulukahiki St. & go short way to Manu Aloha St.
  • Turn Right onto Manu Aloha St. & go to ManuOo St. (end of street)
  • Turn Right into YMCA pkg. lot (temple is in rear)
Temple allegedly built by mythical menehunes (Hawaiian elves). Ceremonial site used to ensure crop fertility/success in war. Remarkable stone work-measuring 140 ft. wide by 180 ft. long by 30 ft. high.

Caution: Please show respect for this sacred site and stay on designated trails-preserve Hawaii's past for the future.

 

STOP 7: KAILUA BEACH PARK PHOTOGRAPH
LEAVE: ULU PO HEIAU PKG. LOT  
DIST/TIME: Approx. 2.9 Miles / 10 Mins.  
WATCH FOR: Bridge over Canal  
 ROUTE:
  • Return to Hwy 61N (traffic light)
  • Turn Left onto Hwy 61N & go 1.1 mi. to fork in road (just beyond Hamakua Dr. traffic light)
  • Bear Left at Fork & continue short way (0.7 mi.) on Kuulei Rd. to S. Kalaheo Ave. (end of road)
  • Turn Right onto S. Kalaheo Ave. & go short way (0.7 mi.) to beach entrance (left side-just beyond bridge over canal)

Beautiful white sand beach with good swimming and gentle surf all year. "The" windsurfing site on Oahu.

Note: Lifeguards all year, picnic, showers, restrooms.

Caution: Beach park canal has dangerous drop-offs.
