16TH ANNUAL LANA'I PINEAPPLE FESTIVAL Place: Dole Park, Lanai City, HI 96763, (808) 565-7600 Date: 7/4/2008 Dole Park, Lana'i City, 4-10 p.m.This annual event is sponsored by Destination Lana'i, a day for residents and visitors to enjoy the celebration of the island's pineapple plantation and ranch history. Local food, craft and game booths, local entertainment and live music. Pineapple eating & cooking contests, pineapple cutting & Hawaiian crafting demonstrations. Everyone is invited. |

LANA'I OBON DANCE Place: Lana'i Hongwanji, P O Box 630-0087, Lanai City, HI 96763, (808) 572-7229 Date: 7/12/2008 Obon is a time to remember and cherish the dead by laying food, incense and flowers on altars and lighting lanterns, so their spirits are welcomed home. Offerings are made at the temple and a dance is conducted outdoors with Kumi Daiko drummers. Dancers dance under a tower of lights decorated with paper lanterns, bamboo and colored paper flowers. The Lanai Hongwanji invites everyone to join the celebration by dancing with them or be a spectator and enjoy the fun. Sushi, saimin and chow fun will be sold at food booth. 7 p.m. |
