The area's topography varies tremendously from barren lava without a stitch of grass to rolling ranch lands to lightly wooded and even lush, jungle-like areas.

The climate is the best-kept secret in Hawaii! Fairly dry and warm throughout the year, although it can get chilly at the upper elevations during the winter months, especially if there is snow on Mauna Loa.

Nearby Ocean View and the quaint villages of Waiohinu and Naalehu offer 2 shopping centers, general store, mini-mart, post office, gas stations, and restaurants.
