BANANA BIODIVERSITY EXHIBIT OPENS AT LYON ARBORETUM

Lyon Arboretum goes bananas with “No End to the Banana”. HONOLULU – The Lyon Arboretum announces a new exhibit highlighting biodiversity and the importance of preserving cultural plants.
The exhibit uses the banana, everyone’s favorite fruit, as a vehicle to discuss genetic diversity and the preservation of the plant that millions of people depend upon for food, shade, fiber, forage, economic stability, and that plays a central role in native Hawaiian culture. The exhibit features displays, 2 short films, and many banana crafts and products from all over the world.
The traveling exhibit was designed by Biodiversity International, and has been featured at the Eden Project in Cornwall, Royal Botanic Garden and the Edinburgh International Science Festival in Scotland, Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden in Florida, Smith College, and many other sites across the U.S. This is the first time it has been shown in Hawai`i.
Opening reception Friday June 5, features a cooking demonstration using dwarf apple bananas, a tour of the exhibit, banana tasting, & light pupus. Cost is $5.00 before/$8.00 at the door. 4:00 – 8:00 p.m. Please call 988-0461 for reservations.
LOMI LOMI WEEKEND WITH ALVA ANDREWS

This workshop, held in a beautiful beach setting, offers you a unique style of lomi lomi which incorporates aspects of lua (Hawaiian martial art), hula and ho'oponopono (forgiveness). Taught by Kumu Alva Andrews,of Oahu, who believes true healing comes only after balancing the spirit, body and mind. A wonderful way to incorporate many aspects of the Hawaiian culture as well as learn powerful lomi lomi techniques. www.healinginparadise.org

OBON FESTIVAL DANCES
Date: June through August
Place: Buddhist Temples throughout the islands
The Obon tradition was brought to Hawaii by Japanese immigrants and evolved into a social and
cultural event, as well as a religious custom designed to honor ancestors through an evening
of dance, music and merry-making. Special services usually start at 7:00 p.m. followed by a
festival with bon (folk) dance at 8:00 p.m. Held at different temples on different dates. Check
