ONOMEA SCENIC
DRIVE
A beautiful 4 mile drive (from just before Mile Post 7 to
Mile Post 11) that winds through rain forest and past waterfalls,
several lookouts and spectacular lava coastline.

HONOMU
The picturesque plantation town of Honomu is now a quaint
storefront village of shops, art galleries and a temple, but
was known in the 1940's as "Little Chicago".

AKAKA FALLS
Walk through a pristine tropical valley to waterfalls tumbling
420 feet in one sheer drop.

KOLEKOLE
BEACH PARK
A rocky beach, too treacherous for swimming, frequented by
"expert" boogie boarders and surfers. Beautiful
waterfall and swimming hole nearby. Great picnic spot.

LAUPAHOEHOE
TRAIN MUSEUM
A restored station agent's house and train landing in the
"old town" of Laupahoehoe offers visitors a look
back at a unique railroad heritage.

HAKALAU
FOREST NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE
Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the refuge
was set aside in 1985 to protect and manage endangered forest
birds and their rain forest habitat. |
