KALAUPAPA SETTLEMENT
Located on the leeward side of the Kalaupapa Peninsula, site of the leper colony ministered by Father Damien. With the arrest of leprosy (Hansen's Disease), the remaining small community of resident patients choose to live in the only home they've ever known.

The solitude of Kalaupapa provides a perfect habitat for many of Hawaii's endangered species including the birth and care of Hawaiian monk seal pups.
